Thisa is excellent advice. I've been doing this for several years. My last western - a mere 40,000 words has in its bible 34 characters with varying amounts of description/backstory. A collection of 21 short stories has 101 characters to keep track of, also to avoid repetition of names!

Thank you for the excellent detailed description.

Just wanted to comment on the 'index' though - it's really a concordance. Word just calls it an index. Indexes are built of interrelated concepts, synonyms, antonyms... not just keywords. You can talk about corpses for a whole chapter and not use the word 'corpse.'

Great information. BTW, for the electronic version, two ideas come to mind. The first is using a wiki to organize all the information. This would allow for easy indexing and cross-referencing.

The other has to do with the writing software I use, Liquid Story Binder. It has a file type called a Dossier that can be used for almost anything you need to keep detailed information about (people, places and things, mainly).

Thanks for stirring up my imagination!
